3 Edible Items That Promote Dental Health

There are many conventional ways to care for your teeth. Most people would not forgo routine brushing and flossing. However, there are also natural measures that you can take to protect your oral health. Some only require an item or two from your kitchen cupboard or refrigerator. Here are a few edible items that can be used to promote good dental health:

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is often used as a base for homemade toothpaste. The oil is not only anti-inflammatory, it is anti-bacterial. Thus, it can help control populations of decay-causing bacteria in your mouth.  

The anti-inflammatory nature of coconut oil can help keep gums from becoming inflamed. This is important because inflammation is the primary cause of gum disease. 

To use coconut oil as toothpaste, simply dip your toothbrush into the oil and brush in your normal manner. Some people may prefer to add a bit of flavor by sprinkling a cinnamon over their brush or by adding a drop of peppermint oil.

Coconut oil can also be used to oil pull. Oil pulling is an ancient practice in which oil is swished about the mouth for a period before being discarded. The oil traps bacteria as it moves throughout the oral cavity. 

Baking Soda

Baking soda is alkaline. It has a pH of 8.3

Much of tooth decay is caused when acid produced by oral bacteria demineralizes tooth enamel. However, baking soda can help neutralize the acid in your mouth. 

Since baking soda is a bit abrasive, it may be best to use it as a mouth rinse. To make your rinse, add about a teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of water.


Turmeric is a brightly colored spice that is often used in Indian cuisine. Its primary active ingredient, curcumin, is anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. Mouthwash made with turmeric is found to be as effective as an oral rinse made with chlorhexidine. You can make your own turmeric mouthwash by sprinkling a bit in a cup of water. The taste is somewhat savory for mouthwash, but the benefits may be worth the sacrifice.
